Talk about Burying the Lead

There was a story in the Wall Street Journal today about President Trump shooting a 68, a remarkable round of golf, particularly for someone his age.

But the most incredible part of the story was the last paragraph:

Trump’s round of 68 was met with some skepticism on social media, though it was hardly the most widely mocked score ever posted by a head of state. According to official North Korean state media reports, the late leader Kim Jong Il tried golf for the first time at a course in Pyongyang in 1994. The reports said he shot a 38-under-par 34 that included multiple holes-in-one.

If the story is to be believed (and why wouldn’t it be, it’s an official state media report), then that might be the most incredible athletic performance of all time. And it’s even more remarkable that it as his first time golfing.

According to Guinness World Records, the lowest golf score over an 18 hole course (male) is 55, and was achieved by Rhein Gibson (Australia) at the River Oaks Golf Club in Edmond, Oklahoma, USA on 12 May 2012.

And Jim Furyk holds the PGA tour record for the lowest round ever, with a 58.

So shooting a 38 is otherworldly.

It would be like running a mile in two minutes (the current world record is 3:43), or hitting 120 home runs in a year (the current record is 73*), or beating Michael Phelps by a full lap in a two-lap race, or writing a blog for over 1,000 straight days without ever saying anything meaningful (oh wait, that’s been done).

So even though I think Kim Jong II’s record is full of holes (not holes in one), I’m confident that President Trump will better that score at some point, since he is the best world-leader/golfer.

My only words of advice for President Trump – just be careful your scorecard doesn’t show a score below an 18; at that point the fake media might actually have something…
